The trends for spring/summer 2008 suggest a season dominated by simplicity and minimalism. These are the findings of the Trend Research Center of Pratotrade, surveyed on the occasion of Up To Date Collection, the event on the latest news in fabrics for spring/summer 2008 and fall/winter 2008-2009 organized by the consortium of Prato’s textile industries.
The new elegance is built of fluid, lightweight fabrics with a cloudlike handle, ideal for the layering game, leit-motif of the season. This means lots of muslin, organza in silk and cotton, and imperceptible gauzy fabrics in viscose and ramiè.
Cotton and viscose are the reigning fibers for fabrics designed for fitted jackets and suits with a shiny look.
The weaves are loose and open in weights between 240 and 260 grams. Light and drape are the most important aspects, provided by fibers like cupram and ramiè even in stonewashed versions.
Yarn-dyed fabrics in black and white are the basic new grisailles for a feminine look presented in masculine designed.
The trench coats and spring jackets choose doubled fabrics in cotton, cotton/nylon spun in baskets and washed for a lived-in but rich look, linen/polyester and cotton coated with polyurethane and silicon for a web look. The linings are in viscose, nylon and polyester, flat or one-way stretch.
Nylon chintz and iridescent nylon is often used alongside vinyl aspects in natural shades, black and bright colors.
Technical textiles in cotton and viscose, stretch or flat, with pants and suit weights for sport-chic garments. Poplin has a papery handle in weights between 200 and 220 grams, or an eggskin handle and fineness.
The news for the season is about shirt weights (180-220 grams) used to make skirts, pants and dresses: soft, roomy garments where blends of poplin and nylon prevail, with cotton/polyamide/elastan in diagonal twill weaves.
The fabrics with a brilliant natural aspect we started to see last winter are back in a spring version with a fluid handle. Cady, satin, crepe and sable are still important in dress weights.
Colored stripes – one color on a white background for shirtings coordinated with brilliant aspects.
In the foreground, fluid jersey, shiny lightweight fabrics, luxurious now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t, for doubling and draping alongside heavier fabrics and knits with a fabric stitch that are perfect for jackets and sexy, slinky dresses.
Jeans, not seen very much, are in dark colors and stretch fabrics.
The prevailing colors are natural and powdery, ranging from flesh tints to peach and coral. Natural beige, leather and orange alongside the eternal black and white. Grey weds yellow that, with electric blue and orange is the key color for the season
