Trends
Marine Design Technical and modern. The inspiration comes from sailing and nautical sports that explore the luxury of modernity. From design to fashion, from the shirt to the parka. Cold colors from the ocean depths, contemporary, casual shades: grey sand, ice blue, metallic browns. The basic apparel - fleece sweaters, tank tops and T-shirts - reinterpreted with new lightweight jersey. The casual theme is renewed by bonded fabrics and cotton grisaille. The menswear fabrics for shirts are used in the feminine gender to find new shapes and new dimensions for romanticism: they are folded into structured geometrical shapes consisting of tiny sewn pleats; the stripes are mixed with the checks. The idea of protection of sports: medium weight fabrics are coated for a technical, fluid aspect. Lightweight cotton plays with bulk and volume. Rough surfaces, contrasting materials, summer tweeds, shiny finishes contrasted with raw fabrics. Patent leather effect, waxed denim. Lightweight, aerodynamic fabrics.
Sporty Glam The ocean depths and a pop inspiration celebrate the dominance of color, full or shades, and of high-polish surfaces. Turquoise, green, yellow, orange, cyclamen, black. A multicolored theme with shades, faded and sprayed effects, with a glossy surface and coated fabrics, stretch satin and tubular knits in solid colors. Plain jersey and crepe are fluid and slippery or have a casual look. Patterns like circles and geometric designs are extra large. Flocked terrycloth and two-tone contrasts.
Retro Pastels A desire for freshness takes the fabrics on a tour of discovery of the casual and romantic. Natural transparency, surfaces and colors reminiscent of sugar and soap. The color research features new pastels dyed in the yarn. Knitted and woven fabrics, ultralight jersey for tank tops and T-shirts, delicate cotton cloth and cotton jersey for pleated or creased effects. Weights are light, airy and bulky. The surfaces are porous with new finishing on the denims. Cotton in pants weights with a dull or soapy finish. Blends of cotton in different weights. Gabardines become technical. Cotton piquet is designed with a whole new concept: laser cutouts, openwork, light brocade with honeycomb effects. Fil coupè and devorè for place of transparency. Floral prints, allover and centered designs, two-tone prints embellish crepon and cotton basics.
Casual Couture Rustic and sophisticated at the same time: these are the headlines of the new classics with contemporary elegance. Full, soft colors that explore the sophisticated nuances of amber and coral. The irregularity of linen and dehydrated surfaces. Shantung, silk and hemp. Sharp, fresh colors. Textured, yarn-dyed fabrics. Clinging but comfortable: the new dimensions of stretch. Fluid and light with a wet look. Metallic effect. Filmy fabrics perfect for sculptured garments designed by pleats and folds. Softness and bulk for ruffles, flounces and frills.
Tropical Attitude The equatorial climate and the jungle provide the inspiration for new cocktail atmospheres. Macro ethic designs and natural optical patterns. The colors of horn, wood, amber and straw meet strong tribal influences. Synthetic canvas, heavy stretch satin, compact cotton, or gauzy cotton veils and crushed fabrics to interpret a new idea of the military look. Knitted and woven fabrics. Jersey used like denim and fabrics with an imperceptible stretch core for a prim safari style. New two-tone and optical patterns play with colors and natural textured aspects. Spots and streaks create informal animalier designs. The search for new natural patterns moves toward exoticism. Large, organic geometric designs, graphic prints create zebra stripes that have never existed before.

The economic situation in Prato district

by the Research Department of the Industrial Association of Prato - January 2008
The performance of the Italian textile and apparel industry began showing signs of slowing in the second half of last year, particularly in the upstream segments of the production chain. The causes are generally attributable to the financial crisis that is causing a recession in the U.S., with consequent repercussions on the dollar exchange with the Euro, and a weaker trend of the main European markets.
In October 2007, in the economic survey carried out by the Industrial Association of Prato on a large sampling of enterprises, the climate of confidence showed a sharp turn downward the performance of orders and production for the Spring-Summer season was judged negatively and this judgment was confirmed, in the forecasts recorded in January 2008. The textile industry in the Prato district ended the year with results that were not completely satisfactory; the performance of the downstream segments (apparel and accessories) was better.
Also on the strength of these indications, the local operators tended to be very prudent, also as regards prospective orders for fall/winter 2008/2009. There is no doubt, in any case, that outside pressure is enormous and the Prato district is undergoing a severe process of competitive selection that has been going on since 2001, which has induced many operators to abandon the business but has also improved the competitivity of many others.
In the recent analysis of financial statements from 2001 to 2006 of the textile corporations in the district, we can see the results of a vast work of restructuring and repositioning. This shows the strong propensity of the local operators to “believe” in the business and a desire to fight for foothold on a market of increasing complexity.
